Disclosure: this guide is written by the FEMUEY team, and we make some of the boards below. Specs for other brands come from each maker’s official product page, checked on 10 October 2026; where a maker does not publish something, we say so. Prices change often, so check the store before you buy.
The short answer
Under $200 you are mostly choosing between two kinds of board:
- Chess computers with the engine built in. Switch on and play, no phone needed.
- App-connected boards, where the board senses your moves and the smart features run in an app on your phone.
Good options at this price: the FEMUEY P6 ($199.99) for screen-free play with real pieces, the Millennium ChessGenius Pro ($169 before tax and shipping) for a standalone board with a color display, the FEMUEY Y2 ($78) as a handheld that also plays Lichess, and the DGT Pegasus (€189) for Lichess games on a board through a phone app. Just over the line, the FEMUEY L6 Pro costs $208.
What you get, and what you give up
A built-in engine or an app
Chess computers such as P6 and ChessGenius Pro play against you with nothing else attached. App boards such as DGT Pegasus are built for online play and rely on your phone for it.
Piece recognition
None of the boards under $200 in our comparison is listed by its maker as identifying each individual piece. Among the boards we compared, individual piece recognition starts with the Chessnut Air at $249.99.
Board size
Square size varies a lot: 28 mm on FEMUEY P6, 40 mm on DGT Pegasus, and 48 mm on the DGT Centaur (€425). If you want large, club-style squares, check this number before you buy.
