Disclosure: this guide is written by the FEMUEY team, and we make some of the boards below. Specs for other brands come from each maker’s official product page, checked on 10 October 2026; where a maker does not publish something, we say so. Prices change often, so check the store before you buy.

The short answer

For most children, a good first electronic chess board has real pieces, no screen to stare at, lights or voice that guide each move, and a computer opponent built into the board, so it works without a phone, tablet or Wi-Fi. That is what we designed the FEMUEY P6 for ($199.99 at the time of writing).

It is not the right board for every child. If your child mainly plays friends on Chess.com, a Chessnut Air or GoChess Mini fits better. If they play in a club and want tournament-size squares, look at the DGT Centaur.

What to look for

Real pieces on a real board

Most children enjoy chess because they can pick up the pieces. A board with physical pieces keeps the game on the table instead of on another screen.

Guidance on every move

Look for lights that show where a piece can go, a hint button, and the option to take a move back. These turn a lost game into a lesson instead of a frustration.

An opponent that works without a phone

Many electronic boards are “smart” only when they are connected to an app. That means handing your child a phone or tablet every time they want to play. A board with its own engine can be switched on and played straight away.

Room to grow

A child improves quickly. Check how strong the built-in engine can play, and whether there are puzzles to practise between games.

Why we built P6 for first games

  • No screen. Colored lights and voice prompts guide each move, so there is no display to operate.
  • No pressing the squares. Magnetic pieces on a magnetic sensor board register moves as you play.
  • An opponent on the board. The 1800 Elo engine runs on P6 itself: no phone, tablet, app or Wi-Fi.
  • Three ways to play. Training, match, and two-player mode for games with family.
  • Practice built in. 200 puzzles and custom endgame setup, with hints and takebacks.
  • In the box. The board, 34 pieces (including two extra queens), two storage bags, a manual and a charging cable. The playing area is 8.8 × 8.8 in, with 28 mm squares and a 2 in king.

Where P6 is not the right fit: it does not play online, it senses moves rather than identifying each piece, it has no screen for move notation, and its compact board is not tournament size.

When another board is a better fit

  • Your child plays friends on Chess.com: Chessnut Air or GoChess Mini, which connect through an app.
  • An older child wants Lichess games on a real board without a phone: FEMUEY L6 Pro.
  • Something for trips: FEMUEY Y2, a handheld with 1,000 puzzles.
  • Club-size squares and pieces: DGT Centaur, with 48 mm squares and an 86 mm king.

FAQ

Does my child need a phone or tablet to play against FEMUEY P6?

No. The engine runs on P6 itself, so your child can switch it on and play without a phone, tablet, app or Wi-Fi.

Can FEMUEY P6 play online?

No. P6 is a standalone board for offline play and practice. For Lichess games on a real board without a phone, see FEMUEY L6 Pro.

Do the pieces stay in place?

P6 uses magnetic pieces on a magnetic sensor board, so the pieces hold their squares during play.

What warranty and returns come with FEMUEY boards?

Every FEMUEY board has a 1-year warranty. Hardware can be returned within 15 days of delivery, and in-stock orders ship worldwide within 72 hours of payment. See the FAQ for details.
